Lyon first belonged to the Non-Occupied zone of Vichy France. That is how the city became a refuge for thousands that were trying to flee the Nazi occupation & the persecutions that were taking place in Occupied France
Some of these refugees joined & helped the locals in founding & developping some underground organizations that helped & rescued the endangered ones. They started to contest & fight against the Vichy Regime that was collaborating with the Nazis, leading to turn the city in what General de Gaulle later proclaimed to be “the Capital of the French Resistance”
Unfortunately, after the invasion of Southern France by the Germans in 1942 the city was severely hit by Nazi repression & by the violence of Klaus Barbie who would later be remembered as “the butcher of Lyon”
This walking tour will take you to the districts of Croix-Rousse & Presqu’île, in the heart of the town, where the members of the Resistance met & organized rebellion & sabotage against Nazi rule in France
You’ll be able to see the places where the members of the Shadows’ Army had their secret headquarters or meeting places. You will also discover the places where some of the persecuted ones were hidden to save them from a certain death but also the places where the victims of nazism were detained & tortured after they were arrested
Lyon still has tracks left today by the combats & events of these dark ages
